Marla
Munro, PhD
Post-Doctoral Resident

Dr. Marla Munro (she/her) is a warm, collaborative therapist who infuses authenticity, humor, and creativity into her work with clients. She uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) interventions with a strong foundation in Feminist, Multicultural, and Interpersonal Therapies. As a queer and neurodivergent therapist who has lived experience with OCD, Marla is committed to co-creating a safe, empowering therapeutic space with clients to support their healing journeys.

Marla is passionate about helping clients reclaim their power and identify and move towards their genuinely held values. She uses a neurodiversity-affirming, disability justice-based approach when supporting clients with Autism and/or ADHD to help them work with their brain, not against it. Marla enjoys incorporating expressive arts, mindfulness, and mind-body/somatic exercises in sessions. She provides psychoeducation to build knowledge, combat shame and stigma, and increase self-efficacy.

Marla works with adults, adolescents, and children (ages 6+) in the following areas:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Anxiety and Panic
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs; Skin Picking, Hair Pulling, etc.)
  • Identity Exploration and Liberation (especially LGBTQIA+ Identities)
  • Body Image (with a Focus on Body Trust and Body Neutrality)
  • Disability Identity and Chronic Illness
  • Attachment, Relationship, and/or Family-of-Origin Concerns

Marla earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Houston. She completed an APA-accredited doctoral internship at the University of Texas at Dallas Student Counseling Center, where she received specialized training in Autism-affirming therapy, body image and eating concerns, and intersectionality- and accessibility-informed treatment. She has clinical experience working in university counseling centers, private practice, and academic medical center settings. Marla has specialized training in Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD and in Comprehensive Behavioral Treatment (ComB) for BFRBs.

Outside of work, Marla enjoys doing all things creative (especially painting, music, and dance), exploring the DFW area, searching for her next favorite latte (iced with oat milk, of course), watching reality TV (the more chaotic, the better), and hanging out with her cat.

Marla is a Post-Doctoral Resident in her final steps towards independent licensure and is supervised by Dr. Katie Croft-Caderao.
